Sustainability

Here at the Brooklane Cottage, we take sustainability to heart.  Our cottage is equipped with an energy efficient washer/dryer, gas-fired on-demand hot water heater, and compact fluorescent bulbs throughout.  In addition, all of the electricity used in the cottage is bought through the Pacific Power Blue Sky Energy Plan, which uses 100% renewable sources of electricity generation (wind, solar, geothermal).  We are also very strong proponents of Organic farming/agriculture and as such do not use any pesticides or herbicides on the gardens and orchards surrounding the Cottage.

Here in the lovely town of Corvallis we feel blessed to be surrounded by such a well-spring of sustainability enthusiasts.  Corvallis has the honor of having the highest bike commuter rate per capita of any city in the country as well as one of the most extensive bike path/bike lane systems for comparable-sized cities in the US.  Corvallis also has in its treasure trove the self-proclaimed honor of having the highest per capita use of biodiesel in the country.  Biodiesel is an alternative fuel made from vegetable oil (or animal fat) that can be used in any diesel engine with no modifications required.  It is essentially a “plug-and-play” alternative to diesel fuel, and boasts huge potential to lessen our dependency on foreign oil.  For more info about biodiesel and the Corvallis Biodiesel Movement, check out www.greaseworks.org.
